About us

Capable horses. Confident riders.
Progress that moves you forward.

Engage the mind, train the body, let the results follow

THE AH APPROACH

We believe horses are individuals, with opinions, motivations and their own way of learning.

They differ in what motivates them, how they process information, and how well they regulate emotion. Some engage more when thereis a purpose or a problem to solve. Others regulate better through predictability and repetition. These differences are well documented in learning theory.

Applied Horsemanship is grounded in real-world experience and a simple principle: when the horse learns how to navigate communication, and the rider learns how to present information clearly, engagement replaces tolerance. Real progress follows.

We teach horses to think, problem-solve and participate, not simply comply. The goal is genuine understanding.

We also do not believe riders need to retreat from their goals or stop asking questions of their horse. It is entirely appropriate to come with direction, intention and ambition. What matters is how the work is presented.

When a practical understanding of horse psychology meets clear communication, both horse and rider change.

Riders gain clarity about what they are asking and why. Horses gain confidence because the information is structured in a way they can process. Progress becomes reliable, not dependent on ideal conditions.

What riders tell us they want:

  • Confidence that holds up on the trail, at shows and at home
  • Clarity about what to do and why it works
  • A partnership that genuinely feels reciprocal
  • A horse who feels secure and responsive, not reactive or tense
  • An athletic horse who engages willingly and moves with confidence

How we get there:

  • A clear understanding of how horses think and learn
  • Progressive exercises that develop thinking under pressure
  • Work that builds reliability you can trust
  • Clear aids, clear intention and growing confidence for both horse and rider

Whether you learn online or join us in person, the aim remains the same. After every session, both you and your horse should feel more capable. That is the standard.

Connection is not something we manufacture. It is the natural outcome of good work.

The horseman behind Applied Horsemanship

Sean Coleman

I grew up in a military family, riding in England and surrounded by an extended family deeply rooted in the equestrian world, particularly show jumping. From early on, I was shaped by exceptional horsemen who influenced how I see horses and the industry.

In my late teens and early twenties, I travelled internationally under the mentorship of leading figures in horsemanship, dressage and western performance, learning across disciplines and systems.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve worked with horses across the US, the UK and beyond. Western and English. Young horses, difficult horses and horses competing at the highest level.

Across every setting, I kept seeing the same pattern. Riders were committed, but lacked clarity. Advice often sounded right, yet failed under pressure. Many approaches asked riders to lower their goals instead of helping them achieve them. What worked for one horse often fell apart with the next.

Applied Horsemanship was built to solve that.

A way of working that holds up in the arena, on the trail and in competition. One that respects the horse’s mind as much as the body. One that gives riders practical tools they can actually apply.

My focus is simple: help riders become more capable, and help horses feel confident in their work. From there, strong, lasting partnerships follow.
